Exposing your Water Blaster to freezing temperatures is a real threat. If water turns to ice in the pump, it can do serious damage. The same is true with the hoses and spray wand. That’s why it's critical to properly store your pressure washer before winter arrives if you want to avoid costly repairs or replacements.

Housing a water blaster during adverse weather conditions requires protecting it from freezing, moisture, and extreme heat to prevent pump damage, rust, and degraded seals. The ideal storage location is a dry, frost-free area like a heated garage, basement, or shed. If stored in an unheated space or outside, it is crucial to winterize the machine to prevent water inside the pump from freezing and expanding, which causes catastrophic failure.
Key Strategies for Adverse Weather Storage:
- Winterization (Freezing Temperatures):
-
- Drain All Water: Remove all water from the pump, hoses, and gun after use to prevent ice from cracking components.
- Use Antifreeze/Pump Saver: Run BE Pump Saver antifreeze through the system to displace water and lubricate seals.
- Remove Accessories: Detach hoses, nozzles, and spray guns, storing them in a warm, dry place.
- Protection from Moisture/Rain (Rust Prevention):
- Use Protective Covers: Use a breathable cloth or a waterproof cover designed for pressure washers to shield it from rain, snow, and dust.
- Elevate the Unit: Place the machine on a sturdy shelf or a piece of wood to prevent it from sitting in moisture on a concrete floor.
- Alternative Shelter Solutions:
- Insulated Enclosures: If it must stay outside, place the pressure washer inside a sealed, insulated, and dry box or a small, enclosed space.
- Heating Elements: For extreme cold, use a 500-watt halogen light bulb, "milk house" heater, or insulated heating tape placed near the pump to maintain a temperature above freezing.
- Gas-Powered Considerations:
- Add a fuel stabiliser to the gasoline to prevent the fuel from degrading during long-term storage.
- Store in an upright position to prevent oil leakage.
What to Avoid:
- Do not leave the pressure washer outside uncovered or unprotected during winter.
- Do not store the machine near heat or ignition sources, which can damage seals.
- Do not leave water in the pump or hoses when temperatures fall below 4°C.
- For long-term storage, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to properly clean, drain, and lubricate the unit.
